The Artwork Commission Process
I will send you progress pictures along the way so you will be able to watch your pet come to life. The process is as follows:
- Introductory consultation (Free of charge)
- Check in call and emailed update of the commissioned piece. Outline Sketch for clients review & approval
- Check in call and emailed update of the commissioned piece. Base Layers for clients review & approval
- Check in call and emailed update of the commissioned piece. Initial Detailing for clients review & approval
- The artist shall produce the final artwork and email the client for final inspection review and approval
If you are gifting your portrait to a loved one, and need it completed for a specific date, please contact me to find out if I can work to your time frame. I always do my best to accommodate where possible. My waiting list does vary during the course of the year though, so please get in contact to find out my current availability.
Do the portraits come frmaed and mounted?
The portraits do not come mounted or framed. They come complete with a care sheet to detail the best way to frame them.
How much is postage?
Postage to anywhere in the UK is £12, your parcel will be delivered using Royal Mail Tracked 24. For anywhere else in the world your parcel will be sent tracked, please see price list for costs. (All services include compensation in case of damage or loss)
FAQ’s
How long will a portrait take to complete?
This depends on the medium requested and size of the artwork. Generally within 1-3 weeks. Please contact me for an accurate time scale, if you need your portrait by a specific time then please let me know and I will try and arrange work to suit your deadline.
There is something in the photo that I would like changed in the portrait is that possible?
Most of the time yes, let me know what you would like changing and I will let you know if it is possible. Usually I can add/remove tack/collars etc, there is no extra charge for this.
On receiving the proof, if I ask for any alterations will there be a charge?
No, although the number of alterations acceptable are at my discretion.
Are there any additional costs other than those stated in the price list?
No
Is the 50% deposit refundable?
Strictly speaking no – however if I haven’t started any prep work on the portrait then I would refund the deposit, but it would be at my discretion.
Pet Portraits Gift Vouchers
I do try to meet special occasions if I can, however it’s not always possible at the busier times of year. In these instances I can send a personalized gift card with all the information needed, in time for their special day. I can send to you or to the recipient and there are two options….
1 You, the giver, or the recipient make all the arrangements from choosing the photo, the design of the portrait, size and medium. Make full payment and be placed in in my commission list, so that the recipient receives the portrait when complete.
2 Pay the amount you wish to give the recipient. (Please see prices) If you have one then please send me a photo of the pet for the voucher card and leave the recipient to decide everything. Either yourself or the recipient can pay for the remainder of the portrait cost if the voucher amount does not cover the full costs.
The gift cards will contain all details required in the card about the gift and service and how to proceed with making the order. Email us at any time with your requirements
How do I place a deposit to secure a space?
A 50% deposit is required to save your space in in my commissions list. I will email a secure invoice.
Clients based in in the UK can pay via bank transfer, credit or debit card via Square or via Paypal. Overseas clients can pay via a debit or credit card via Square or Paypal
Please note that there is an additional 4% fee if using Paypal or Square to cover their charges.
When do I pay the final amount?
Once you have approved your final proof the reminder of the balance will be due. I accept debit and credit cards through Paypal, Squareor by bank transfer.

Do you offer instalment options?
Yes. I can take a set payment each month until the portrait has been paid in full. On the final payment, I can then start the artwork.
Can you paint multiple dogs?
Yes, however the size of the paper or canvas governs how many pets you can have in in one portrait. portrait. The more pets you would like in a portrait together, the larger your portrait will need to be. So for instance an 8×10”portrait can only accommodate one head and shoulders portrait,. Can I have a background in my portrait?
Yes! Send me your photos and let us know your ideas for a portrait and I can discuss your options. Also please refer to price list
Reference Photos – (see how to take the best photo’s on our Reference Photo Guidelines page.
The photo you choose needs to depict your pet well – – a photo where you would naturally say – – “Ahh “Ahh that’ that’s a really good one of them”. Remember – – you know everything about your pet however I can only go by the photos you send. See the guide following these FAQ’s for help with reference images.
How many photos should I send?
As many as you have! have! The more the merrier! I never
tire of looking at your pets photos. They bring me joy and make me smile… and sometimes cry when I know they have passed. I know how much they mean to you.
Can you combine single photos to create a group portrait?
I can create paintings or drawings of as many pets as you would like in in the same piece of artwork within reason It’s mostly best to provide separate photos of each pet, pet, however seeing pets together does help . I can put them together in in the drawing or painting for you..
What size photos do you need?
It is important to try to send me the largest sized photos you have. have. If you have WhatsApp you can send photos direct from your photos app, or alternatively email them to me at craftycavalierstudio.reference@gmail.com
Can amendments be made to the finished portrait?
A final photo of the painting or drawing is emailed to the client direct for them to check to see if they would like any amendments made. This may not be possible however due to the nature of the medium worked in. Progress photos will be sent throughout the portraits journey for approval before continuing, so this should eliminate any need for final piece amendment.
Can I use my painting or drawing commercially?
Please let me know when you enquire about a portrait if you are looking to use the portrait for packaging or logo design etc.
I do hold the copyright on my paintings and drawings so they must never be used without my permission. None of my commissioned work on my website or social media can be used commercially as the copyright of the photos that that I paint or draw from, belong to myself and my clients.
Artwork Usage
You may not:
- Recolour, trace, crop or otherwise create a derivative of my artwork without my permission
- Claim the artwork as your own
- Sell or otherwise make profit from it in any way
- Remove or edit my signature stamp
- Have another artist or yourself edit it without my permission
You may:
- Upload it to your account on various social media platforms and websites so long as my name and link back are given
- Print it for you won private, non-profit use
- Crop part of your commission image for use as an icon
Do you display the portrait on your website?
Yes, I usually add my portraits on my website and other social media. My clients also enjoy seeing their pets being honoured on my site too. If you would specifically prefer your name or your portrait not to appear, please do let me know when ordering. Respect of privacy is important to me.
Will I need to sign a contract?
Yes, a contract will be emailed to you prior to taking a deposit and starting the commissioned artwork. An initialled and signed copy will be required to returned to me prior to invoicing for the deposit
What is your commission refund policy?
Refunds will not be given if the work has already begun. The only exception to this is if the work has not begun and I am the one who cancels the commission or exceeds the time frame agreed for completion. Partial refunds may be given but only at my discretion.
Do you offer any additional products such as prints?
All pet portraits are scanned as a high-resolution digital file by me and kept in my portfolio. In addition your commission may be made available in my online store for purchase as an art print and other products. If you prefer not to have this done, please let me know. I will always respect your privacy. Please keep in mind that by allowing me to make prints etc available of your commission piece, I am able to keep my original artwork prices reasonable.
